We’re simplifying Windsurf pricing across Free, Pro, and Teams alongside launching a new Max plan for our power users.
The new plans replace the current credit-based system with industry-standard quotas, giving users a simpler way to use Windsurf without worrying about credits.
If you’re an existing paid subscriber, we’re adding a free extra week to your subscription to try the new system before you commit. Your current price isn’t changing either — more on that below.
What’s changing:
- No more credits. Your Free, Pro, or Teams plan includes a usage allowance that refreshes automatically on a daily and weekly basis. For the majority of users, this quota will be enough to fully cover all agent usage.
- For paid plans, if you go beyond your included usage, you can purchase extra usage which will be consumed at API pricing.
What’s not changing:
- The majority of Pro and Teams users will see no change in what they can do day-to-day. We’ve set the included usage to cover normal workflows comfortably.
- Enterprise customers will continue to follow existing billing agreements.
Why we’re making this change
Our previous credit-based billing model charged the same rate for both simple and complex requests. This led users to be scared of asking quick questions, knowing they’d consume the same credits as a lengthy, complex task. Many users felt pressured to cram multiple requests into single prompts rather than working interactively with the agent, ultimately degrading the quality of their Windsurf experience.
As models have improved, the variance in the length of each model turn has increased dramatically and the longest sessions can involve dozens of model calls. We believe this trend will continue, and we want you to focus on building, not on optimizing how to maximize the output from each request.
What are the new plans?
We are updating our plans as follows. The plans will go into effect on Thursday, March 19th, 2026.
Free | Pro | Teams | Max (NEW) |
|---|---|---|---|
$0 / mo | $20 / mo | $40 / seat / mo | $200 / mo |
Everything in Free, plus: | Everything in Pro, plus: | Everything in Pro, plus: | |
Light quota to code with agents | Increased quotas, including access to frontier OpenAI, Claude, and Gemini models | Centralized billing | Significantly higher quotas |
Limited model availability | Full model availability | Admin dashboard with analytics | Priority support |
Unlimited inline edits | Purchase extra usage at API pricing | Priority support | |
Unlimited Tab Completions | Automated zero data retention |
What are the usage limits for my plan?
Usage consumption will vary based on the complexity of the task and the underlying model you’ve chosen. Simple scripts use very little of your allowance, while larger codebases or longer sessions with more context will use more per message.
Here is an estimate of the number of messages that you may expect to see:
Pro and Teams | Max | |
|---|---|---|
Premium Plus (Opus 4.6, GPT-5.4, GPT-5.3-Codex) | 7-27 messages / day | 42-170 messages / day |
Premium (e.g. Sonnet 4.6, GPT-5.2, Gemini Pro) | 8-101 messages / day | 47-631 messages / day |
Lightweight (e.g. Haiku, Flash) | 47-190 messages / day | 291-1,190 messages / day |
The usage limits assume a daily window. An additional weekly limit applies. The estimates are based on current usage patterns.
Try it before you decide
We recognize this is a significant change to how Windsurf pricing works, so instead of asking you to take our word for it, we’re inviting you to experience it for free for a week.
Every existing paid subscriber will receive a free extra week on their current plan, starting March 19th. Use that week to code with the new quota system, and get a feel for how it maps to your actual workflow.
If you love it, you don’t need to do anything: your plan continues at your current grandfathered price. If you’re not satisfied after this week, you can cancel and request a prorated refund.
We’re doing this because we’re confident the new system is better for the way most developers actually use Windsurf, and we’d rather prove that than ask you to trust a blog post.
What will happen to existing subscribers?
Free users will be automatically migrated to the new quota system.
If you are a Pro or Teams user, we will grandfather in your current plan price indefinitely, but your plan will migrate to the new usage allowance system. This means that you will be able to access the new plans at the current price point.
Enterprise users will be unaffected in the immediate term and should reach out to their account teams with questions.
What happens when you hit usage limits?
Pro, Teams, and Max users who reach their usage limits can purchase extra usage to continue working.
You can also continue using free models like SWE-1.5 without any additional charges.
What happens if I bought add-on credits previously?
Your add-on credits will be converted into a dollar amount for extra usage that you can use to pay for extra usage. We will convert them at a rate equivalent to how much you paid for them.
How does extra usage work?
Extra usage lets you continue using Windsurf after you reach your included usage limits. Usage draws down from your available USD amounts based on the models and features you use, allowing you to extend work without interruption.
Cost per message varies based on the model used, the task size and complexity, and the reasoning required. Average rates may evolve over time as new capabilities are introduced. Currently, we bill extra usage LLM cost at API price.
Priority and speed configurations will increase usage consumption for all models that apply (e.g. SWE-1.5 Fast, fast GPT and Opus model variants, etc.).
