Windsurf Next Launch

Cognition2 min read

We are launching our prerelease version of Windsurf, called Windsurf Next, for those early adopters that want to opt-in to access the newest capabilities as soon as possible, even if there are some rough edges that need to be polished before they become generally available in the stable release of Windsurf.

Windsurf Next achieves two goals.

First, while we do a lot of internal testing before making anything available to the public, we recognize that we may not be reflective of the wide variety of developers, tasks, and tech stacks that exist. We would love to learn from data on how real developers are using new features before we decide on a final packaging to ship to the world as part of a Wave (what we call a group of new features or improvements), and Windsurf Next allows us to do this.

Second and more importantly, we get you, the user, access to the latest and greatest even more quickly. It might not yet be perfect and there might be some buggy behavior to start, but you can join us on the front line exploring the frontier of what is possible with AI in software development.

Now, some quick expectation setting about Windsurf Next. We will be pushing updates to Windsurf Next much more frequently than updates to the stable version of Windsurf. We are not sure exactly what stable-state frequency we will end at just yet. Because of this frequency, updates go through significantly less QA than updates to the stable version, so expect that there may be bugs and rough edges. Since this is expected behavior, support tickets may not be responded to or addressed, though they are appreciated to flag issues. Instead, you can simultaneously install Windsurf Next and the stable release of Windsurf. This means that if there are any rough edges affecting your work and you can’t wait for fixes, you can always fall back to the stable release of Windsurf, no problem. Finally, since these are often in-progress features, we may not have all of the ZDR guarantees completely built out, which is why Windsurf Next is marked as a beta product and will not be available to Teams or Enterprise customers.

If you want to join the community of Windsurf Next users, hop on to our Discord. We will soon have ways for you to self-identify yourself as a Windsurf Next user so that we all can discuss new features and capabilities before they are released. Not discussed theoretically, but actually. That’s Windsurf Next.
